Sara Blakely Bio, Founder of Spanx

Born February 21, 1971, in Clearwater, Florida, Sara Blakely is the founder of the underwear company SPANX. A self-described "door-to-door salesgirl" of copiers and office equipment for years, Blakely waited for the right idea to come to her before starting her own company -- and eventually hit upon it when she cut the feet off of her pantyhose so that she could wear them with open-toed shoes.

With a five thousand dollar investment, Blakely opened SPANX to sell a variety of underwear, notably its footless pantyhose and bodyshaping undergarments to slim and sculpt the wearer's appearance. She was bestowed the Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year award in 2002, and the company today has more than 50 employees, a separate brand at Target (ASSETS), and $150 million in retail sales.
