Julie Aigner-Clark Bio, Founder of Baby Einstein
The videos took off, and the company grew quickly. Aigner-Clark sold a fifth of the company to Artisan Entertainment in 2000 and the remainder to the Walt Disney Company the following year. Each video is named for a famous historical figure -- the second video, Baby Mozart, focuses on music; Baby Monet presents the seasons; and so on. The idea is that early exposure to the right stimuli will make for smarter, more artistic, and more engaged children -- studies had shown previously that listening to Mozart and other classical music had a beneficial effect on early child development. Subsequent studies including the Baby Einstein series are undecided about their effect, with some crediting it for improving the vocabulary of its child audience and others blaming it for worsening that vocabulary. Because the company bears the name of its initial video, Baby Einstein, the estate of Albert Einstein earns considerable royalties, making him one of the "wealthiest dead celebrities," according to Forbes magazine. Since being purchased by Disney, the company has expanded to produce a television show and a variety of toys. Aigner-Clark no longer produces content for the series, but works as a consultant for the company, as well as collaborating with America's Most Wanted creator-host John Walsh on The Safe Side, a safety video for elementary school students. |
